The city is referred to as the political, cultural and economical heart of the country and about one fifth of its population resides here. Originally, the city was divided into two parts by the river Danube and known as Buda and Pest. Its current title stems from 1873. The city covers more than 500 km and is located at two sides of the river Danube. When you explore the city with a hire car, Budapest Airport or several offices downtown can function as pick up or drop off location. This way, Budapest is easy to explore.

Travelling by hire car in Budapest

The history of Budapest dates back from the Romans to the Huns, Avars and Slavs. It even took a while before the Hungarian occupation commenced. This occured around the year 900 AC but these times were grim and warlike, still. After numerous occupations of Mongols and Turks, among others, Hungary became part of the Habsburg dynasty of Austria-Hungary. In this period Hungary blossemed and strong foundations were built to prevent further conquers from outside. Hungary seemed to become a well-established nation but alas, the Nazi's intervened. Liberation came in the form of an even greater oppressor. The former Soviet-Union certainly left its marks on Hungary. In 1989 the Republic of Hungary was declared in Budapest, its population decreased in numbers but the economy improved. Many 18th century buildings in the city remained and characterize the appearance of the city until our current time. Some of the sights in the city include:

  • the castle hill Várhegy, actually a separate village, built 70 meters above the Danube waterlevel. The ancient Royal palace with its authentic walls, streets and architecture from the 13th century are located here
  • the Matthias church, a neogothic church in the Buda area
  • the Hungarian Parliament, at the Pest side of the Danube. This immensive structure is symbol for Budapest and covers 268 meters in length. The dome is surrounded by 2 large and 20 smaller towers and it has 29 stairways

Buda as well as Pest are impressive areas. Some parts of the city house gothic churches, other parts neo-classical structures. However, all buildings are less old than one would expect. Most of the architecture is from the 19th century. A beautiful example of architecture is the Fisherman's Bastion, a charming neoroman terrace with sparkling-white stone walls, arches, stairs and a nice view of the Danube. When discussing Budapest one can still speak of Buda and Pest. Two thirds of the city ground is located in Pest. This also includes the business infrastructure. Interesting sights in Pest include:

  • the Heroes' square, with a statue of Árpád, founder of Hungary
  • Station West and the Margaret bridge (picture), impressive examples of Hungarian architecture
