Location information for Sorrento

Introduction

Sorrento is a typical Italian town, just south of Naples. Those who feel that the bustle of that city is too much of a good thing, often choose Sorrento as an operating base to visit the ruins of Pompeii or the island of Capri.

Population

The town has approximately 17,000 inhabitants.

Location

Sorrento is located on the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the Gulf of Naples. On the south side of the peninsula you'll find the beaches of Amalfi on the Gulf of Salerno. From Sorrento you can easily reach the island of Capri; it lies just west of town. From the city you also have a beautiful view of Mount Vesuvius.

Economy

Sorrento produces the famous limoncello, a digestif made of lemon rinds, water, alcohol and sugar. They also make lemon cake. Besides citrus fruit, the region produces grapes and olives (of which large part is converted into olive oil). Tourism is also an important source of income for Sorrento.

Airports

The international Naples Airport (also: Aeroporto Capodichino) is situated 55 car kilometers north of Sorrento. It's easily reachable by rental car via the SS145 and freeway A3.

Public Transport

The companies SITA and Circumvesuviana exploit public transport both within the city and in the region, for example to places like S. Agata, Nerano, Marciano and Amalfi. There's a uniform ticket system called UnicoCostiera. You can use one ticket (within a certain time limit) for buses (and trains) of both companies. From Sorrento's harbor, ferries maintain the connection with Capri and in summer months also with Amalfi on the peninsula's south coast.

Traffic and Parking

Sorrento has sufficient parking facilities. There's a large parking garage near the harbor and you can also park your rental car in one of the other garages or parking lots in the city, for example at the large parking lot along the Via San Renato. From Naples you can reach Sorrento via freeways A3 and SS145 (exit Castellammare di Stabia). We recommend making a scenic trip by rental car from Sorrento to Amalfi; it's a narrow but impressive road along the high rocky coast.

Hotels

Sorrento is geared towards tourists and has therefore no shortage of accommodation. We do advise, however, booking your hotel room well in advance in summer months. Besides hotels and guesthouses, there are also bed & breakfasts and you can rent apartments. Nearby the city you'll find campsites and there are possibilities for agritourism (vacationing at farmhouses).

 What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.

 Are there any additional costs?

In general, our rates are all-inclusive. Should there be any additional costs, our booking department will get in touch with you before issuing the invoice. Should you object, you can always cancel your reservation with no obligations attached (at least 48 hours in advance).

What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental?
