Travelling by hire car in Brussels
Brussels is the capital of the French and Flemish, geographically and linguistically. The city emanates an international atmosphere because of this. This atmosphere is strengthened by the presence of NATO and many headquarters of multinationals. On top of this, the city has a beautiful architecture, lovely parks and cosy narrow streets which present a centre of culinary delight. The central market place, or Grand' Place, is surrounded with beautiful neogothic buildings, guilds and a city hall that was built from 1402. The 'Broodhuis' (breadhouse) is a former market for bread but nowadays houses the Museum of Brussels. The Grand' Place was named by UNESCO as world heritage site since 1998. Other areas of interest in the city include:
- the Atomium, built for the World's fair (Expo) in 1958
- the Jubelpark, with an impressive arch which was completed in 1905. Besides this the park has many museums, gardens, waterfalls and ponds
- the Cathedral of St-Michiel and Saint Michael and Gudula, the most important church in the old town centre
The ambience created by the neogothic structures at the central market place is simply breathtaking. One can wander around the old town centre for hours without getting bored. The Warandepark adds a little something to the whole experience. The park covers 13 hectares and is situated between the Royal Palace and the Federal Parliament of Belgium. There is a beautiful view of the fountain in the park from the classical archway. Besides the overwhelming architecture the smaller things that characterize the city are well worth a visit as well:
- ' Manneken Pis' , a small statue of a boy urinating. The statue has a wardrobe of about 700 costumes and brings a cheerful stream of culture, sometimes even in the form of beer or wine (during festivities)
- Mini-Europe, a miniature city with buildings and monuments of the European Union
