Dubrovnik is an attractive town in Croatia and a touristic top destination at the Adriatic Sea. Back in the 19th century Dubrovnik was discovered by European royal houses and other rich Europeans to spend their vacations. The beautiful old city was placed on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1979.
Due to the falling apart of Yugoslavia and the following wars, Dubrovnik's population decreased in the 90's, now the population is increasing again; it has 50,000 inhabitants.
Dubrovnik is located in the most southern part of Croatia next to the Adriatic Sea. Split is located 165 kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik has a good network of city buses. The company Libertas has exceptionally modern buses that take you to every destination in the city. Buses to other cities in Croatia leave from the central bus station. You can buy tickets for the city buses everywhere in the city, which are valid for 1 hour. Buying a ticket in the bus is slightly more expensive. Day tickets are also available.
The old city center is totally traffic free (with the exception of city buses) and therefore it is impossible to drive around. This is however not necessary, because Dubrovnik's center can be easily explored on foot, although it is rather steep here and there. Finding a parking space outside the city center is difficult, especially in the summer months most parking spaces are constantly occupied. However, your rental car is an excellent means of transport to explore the Dubrovnik area.
