Introduction

Virtually speaking, Bergamo consists of two cities. The upper city on top of a hill and the lower city which is the modern part. Of old, Bergamo associates itself with Venice.

Population

Bergamo has about 118,000 inhabitants and belongs to the 40 largest cities in Italy. The city has a strong sense of local identity, which expresses itself, among other things, in its local dialect.

Location

Bergamo is located in the Lombardy region, like Milan. The city is located at the foot of the Alps, and on a sunny day, you can see the skyscrapers of Milan in the south-west

Economy

Bergamo's economy is characterized by the industrial sector that is active in engineering, textile, chemicals, food and construction products. Especially the transformation of minerals into iron, concrete and marble are economic drivers. The professional population in this area is famous for its dedication and skills. The city is little known among tourists.

Airports

Bergamo has a local airport, called "Orio al Serio" (BGY in short), which is located a few kilometers to the south-east of the center. The airport processes a handful of international flights.

Public transport

The bus company "SAB" is active in Bergamo, offering services to the surrounding areas, including Milan. There is also a train station, from where regular trains depart for Milan. The journey takes about 50 minutes.

Traffic and Parking

In Bergamo there are as good as no problems with regard to the traffic and transport situation. Both the lower and higher part of the city is very accessible by car.

Hotels

In Bergamo it is advisable to book in advance. If you do not want to do that, we suggest you arrive early at the hotel. Although it is not a very touristic city, hotels can fill up quickly sometimes.
