Introduction

Pula is the largest city on the Croatian peninsula of Istria and a popular holiday destination. De city itself is very old and there are many Roman remains to admire, such as a beautiful amphitheatre. Add to this Istria's natural beauty, the beautiful sandy beaches, the blue water of the Adriatic Sea and the picturesque towns and villages in the area and it will be clear why Istra has always been a tourist destination. The Brijuni National Park consists of several small islands of Istria's southwest coast. Yugoslavian president Tito's country residence was here and therefore Brijuni has been visited by many Heads of State and Government. On the islands you can find dinosaur footprints.

Population

The city has a population of 65,000.

Location

Pula is located on the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula in northwest Croatia. West of Istria is the Gulf of Venice and east of the peninsula is Kvarner Bay. Both are part of the Adriatic Sea.

Economy

Already in Roman times, Pula was an administrative center and it still is. Furthermore, fishery, shipbuilding and wine production are important for the economy. Pula and the rest of the peninsula have been a popular holiday destination for a long time.

Airports

The city's airport is located twelve kilometers northeast of the city. Pula Airport is easily accessible by rental car. From the city, follow the Šianska cesta, which leads to the starting point of highway A9. Just east of that is the airport.

Public Transport

Pula has good public transport. Please note that buses return to the depot at half past eleven pm.

Traffic and Parking

The old city center, around the Roman amphitheatre, is a pedestrian zone. Furthermore, there are many narrow one-way streets in the center. Therefore, it is recommended to see the city on foot. You can park your rental car in one of two new parking garages or at a parking lot. We do not recommend parking your car in the street.

If you would like to discover the rest of Istria, a rental car is an ideal means of transport. You should keep in mind though, that the highways on Istria only have single carriageways. Because these roads often are very curvy too, overtaking is risky. Drive carefully, do not overtake when you do not have a clear view and keep an eye on oncoming traffic.

Hotels

There is no shortage of accommodations in and around Pula: guesthouses, hotels, apartments, holiday resorts, villas and campsites. Istria is very busy during summer and if you would like to visit Pula during that period, we recommend booking your accommodation well in advance. Between October and April many hotels are closed.
