Aalborg is an industrial and university city in the south of Denmark. In the Middle Ages the city prospered because of its location by the Limfjord. The traditional houses in the center dating back from the seventeenth century still show the prosperity of those days.
The city has almost 200,000 inhabitants making it the fourth largest city in Denmark, after Copenhagen, Århus and Odense.
Aalborg is situated on the eastern part of the Limfjord which runs straight through North Jutland. Close to the city this fjord is relatively narrow, but west of Aalborg the Limfjord broadens to an irregularly shaped lake with swampy shores and many islands (the biggest one being Mors).
Although the activity more and more revolves around new technologies, Aalborg is still an important industrial center. Grains, cement and fish are exported through the harbor. It's also the home base of the Danske Spritfabrikker, mainly known for the production of aquavit, and Aalborg Industries.
The last few years Aalborg has become a center of wireless telecommunication technology.
Over six kilometers northwest of the city center lies Aalborg Airport, the third airport of the country. The airport processes about 1 million passengers each year. Flights leave for both domestic and some European destinations. The airport is easily reachable from the city center by rental car. You cross the Limfjord and follow road 55. The exit to the airport is clearly indicated.
Aalborg has a good public bus system. Most city busses leave from the central bus station Østerå. In summer months a limited timetable applies. There are no busses at night. Taxis in Aalborg are very expensive!
Only on Sundays parking is free. When no parking meters are available, often a time limit for parking applies.
Aalborg has several car parks, among others Palads Parking, Metax Parking, Kennedy Arkaden and Salling. Bear in mind that most car parks are closed at night.
Aalborg has a good supply of accommodation. You can go to a friendly Bed & Breakfast, but the city also offers excellent four star hotels. In general you don't need to book your room a long time in advance.
