Location information for Cefalu

Introduction

Cefalù is a picturesque Sicilian town, which was founded by the Greek. They named this town Kephalos (which means "head"), after the shape of a rock that dominates the town. On La Rocca you will find remnants from the Greek and Roman times and also the remains of a medieval fortress. The cathedral at the bottom of La Rocca was built in the 12th century; inside it you will find beautiful Byzantine mosaic. Cefalù's biggest attraction is the beach, one of Sicily's best.

Population

The town has about 15,000 inhabitants.

Location

Cefalù is located on Sicily's north coast on the Tyrrhenian Sea, halfway Trapani in the east and Messina in the west. Sicily's capital - Palermo - is 75 kilometers west of Cefalù.

Economy

Cefalù is still a fishing village, but tourism has become more important. Until recently, it was mostly Italians who spent their holidays here, but more Europeans and also tourist from around the world discover this town, its fine beaches and diverse surroundings.

Airports

The city itself does not have an airport. Palermo International Airport is the nearest airport, one hundred kilometers west of Cefalù. This airport is easily accessible by rental car via highway A20. Messina airport is located about 160 kilometers east of Cefalù and can also be reached via the A20. Highway A19 goes to Catania airport, about 160 kilometers south east of Cefalù.

Public Transport

Cefalù has good public transport, which consists of four bus services. Furthermore there are railway and bus connections to other locations on Sicily, including Palermo and Messina.

Traffic and Parking

It is not allowed to park in the old center. There are parking facilities on the edge of the center (both free and paid). There is a parking garage at the Via Verga. A rental car is an ideal means of transport to explore Cefalù's surroundings, for example for a daytrip to Castelbuono just south of the town.

Hotels

With the increasing number of tourists visiting Cefalù, the number of accommodations grows accordingly. In and around Cefalù you will not only find hotels, guest houses and holiday resorts, but you can also rent an apartment, cottage or farmhouse. In July and August it is very busy. If you would like to visit Cefalù is those months, we recommend you to book your accommodation well in advance. Many hotels are closed from November until Easter.
