What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.

Are there any additional costs?

Like many other places on Sicily, Giardini Naxos used to be a quiet fishing village. Since the seventies of the last century the village has developed into a popular seaside resort with beautiful beaches and a panoramic view over the bay. In July and August it can get very busy.

Location

Giardini Naxos is located in the Province of Messina on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily. The seaside resort lies on a beautiful bay between Cape Taormina and Cape Schisò. The town of Taormina is (almost) at walking distance. West of town lies the impressive Mount Etna Volcano.

Economy

Giardini Naxos means 'gardens of Naxos' and it's one of the most attractive places on Sicily's east coast. Tourism is therefore the main source of income: the seaside resort is visited by both Italians and foreigners (mainly French and Germans). Many yachts and cruise ships moor in Giardini Naxos' harbor.

Airports

The nearest airport is Catania Airport, 60 kilometers southwest of the city center. Catania-Fontano-Rossa Airport is easily reachable by rental car via freeway A18.

Public Transport

There's no public bus transport in Giardini Naxos; you need to use taxis. Buses do leave from the Recanati bus station to surrounding places, including Taormina.

Traffic and Parking

Giardini Naxos gets very busy in summer months and it may then be difficult to find a free parking place for your rental car. It's best to leave it at your hotel and use it for trips in the surroundings and to the beaches further out. There are usually enough parking places near the beaches.

Hotels

Giardini Naxos has no shortage of accommodations. The most popular hotels and guesthouses lie close to the sea, along the Via Tysandros. Bear in mind that July and August are busy. Book your hotel room well in advance if you want to visit Giardini Naxos in those months. It gets particularly busy around 15 August when the annual Ferragosto festival takes place. If you cannot find accommodation in the town itself, there are also several hotels and holiday resorts in the vicinity.
