Introduction

Already in the sixteenth century Agadir was a trading port. Nothing is left of the old Agadir as the city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1960. Afterwards the city was rebuilt and developed into the seaside resort of Morocco, where many Europeans winter.

Population

The city itself has about 200,000 inhabitants. Including the cities Inezgane en Aït Melloul they are about three times as many.

Location

Agadir is situated in the south of Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean. North of the city lie the foothills of the High Atlas, in the south the Anti-Atlas. Behind that mountain range lies the Sahara desert.

Economy

Although fishing is still important, the local economy mainly thrives on tourism. Of the more than 8 million visitors to Morocco each year, a large part spends at least a few days in Agadir.

The city surroundings are very fertile; mainly citrus fruit is grown.

Airports

The airport Al Massira is situated 22 kilometers southeast of the city center. It's easily reachable by rental car; the airport lies directly along the road to Marrakech.

Public Transport

A public bus system exists in Agadir but busses are infrequent and often crowded. The so-called 'petit taxis' are the obvious form of public transport. Anyway, the tourist center of Agadir isn't very large. You can easily explore it by foot.

Traffic and Parking

As everywhere in Morocco, traffic in Agadir can be chaotic and busy. Never leave your car just anywhere in the street, but park in one of the official guarded car parks. For a few Dirhams your car is safe here. There is a large car park at the famous city Souk.

Be aware of large trucks around Agadir. You can also come across donkeys and other livestock, handcarts and people in the middle of the road!

Hotels

Being the main seaside resort of Morocco there is no shortage of accommodations in Agadir; ranging from simple guesthouses to large tourist hotels and holiday resorts. It's recommended to book your hotel room well in advance. Agadir draws tourists all year round.
