Introduction

Playa de las Américas is a place on Tenerife purpose-built for tourists. The beaches near this tourist location have been raised with yellow sand from Africa, to cover the black, volcanic sand. Playa de las Américas has an exuberant nightlife, with numerous bars, restaurants, nightclubs and discos.

Population

Playa de las Américas itself doesn't really have any permanent inhabitants, as it's purpose-built for tourists. The Municipality of Arona, of which it's part, has approximately 60,000 inhabitants.

Location

Playa de las Américas is located in the southwest of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands off the west coast of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean. East of Tenerife lies Gran Canaria with the capital of the Canary Islands, Las Palmas. West of Tenerife lies the island of La Palma.

Economy

Since Playa de las Américas is purpose-built for tourists, it's not hard to guess what the main source of income is. This applies by the way to all of Tenerife. Annually, 4.5 million people visit the island; mainly the beaches in the south: Playa de las Américas and the connected Los Cristianos.

Airports

The island's main airport, South Tenerife Reina Sofia Airport, lies close to Playa de las Américas. It's situated 18 kilometers west of the tourist resort and is easily reachable by rental car via the TF-1, Tenerife's main road.

Public Transport

The green buses of the Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife S.A. (TITSA) call at all places on Tenerife. They are modern, air-conditioned buses and the rates are low. The ride can take long though, as there are many stops. There's an express bus connection between Playa de las Américas and the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the north.

Traffic and Parking

Parking can be a problem in Playa de las Américas. Double parking is common though. It may imply that you can't leave, but if you blow your horn, the other driver will appear to move his car. It's prohibited to park near a curb with a continuous yellow line, although the locals tend to ignore this ban. Many hotels offer free parking for your rental car.

Hotels

Besides places of entertainment and shops, Playa de las Américas consists exclusively of hotels, holiday resorts and apartment buildings. We still advise booking your accommodation well in advance, as it's the most popular seaside resort on Tenerife attracting tourists all year round.
