Location information for Manhattan

Introduction

Manhattan (not to be confused with the central part of New York) is a city in the American state of Kansas. It's a typical university town, but in the last few years Manhattan also draws more and more retirees who appreciate the 'all American feel' of the city.

Population

The city has over 50,000 inhabitants. The high student population is reflected by the number of 18- to 25-year olds: almost 40 percent.

Location

Manhattan is located in the northeast of the American state of Kansas in the Midwest of the United States. The city is built on the Kansas River which flows east and discharges into the Missouri near Kansas City. North of Manhattan lies Tuttle Creek Lake.

Economy

Kansas State University has 23,000 students and is the city's largest employer. Those students are good customers of the shops and places of entertainment in Manhattan. There's also an American army base, Fort Riley, close to town. In short, the city's economy mainly revolves around public services, but there's also some industry, including a large manufacturer of sportswear.

Airports

Manhattan Regional Airport is situated directly west of town, at only 4 kilometers from the center. It's easily reachable by rental car via freeway K-18. The nearest international airport is Kansas City Airport.

Public Transport

Manhattan has poor public transport. There's only one bus line (which uses minibuses), exploited by ATA Bus. This company is negotiating with the city council to expand the number of bus lines.

Traffic and Parking

As said before, Manhattan's public transport is poor and residents (and visitors) therefore have to rely on cars. Manhattan is an extremely car-friendly city, where you'll have no trouble finding your way around or finding a free parking place for your rental car. There's a large parking lot and a parking garage under construction near the conference center on 4th Street.

Hotels

Manhattan has a limited choice of accommodations. Most hotels fall in the basic or midrange category. There are some motels near the freeway.
