Location information for Coolangatta
Introduction
Coolangatta is the southernmost suburb of Gold Coast City, on the Australian east coast. The naming is somewhat bizarre: the place was called after the schooner Coolangatta which was wrecked here in a violent storm in 1846. Coolangatta and surroundings are a popular holiday destination because of the Gold Coast beaches.
Population
The town has over 5,000 inhabitants.
Location
Coolangatta is located on Australia's east coast, just inside Queensland (but part of the airport's runway lies in New South Wales). Coolangatta has a humid, subtropical climate with most rainfall in March. Coolangatta really forms a group with Tweed Heads, but this 'Twin Town' lies in New South Wales.
Economy
Just like Tweed Heads, Coolangatta has a large fishing community and shellfish therefore forms a significant ingredient on the menus in the tourist restaurants and hotels. Tourism is the other important source of income. Many retired Australians also choose to live on the Gold Coast.
Airports
The airport used to be named after Coolangatta, but nowadays it's called Gold Coast Airport. It's situated directly west of Coolangatta, between the Gold Coast Highway and the Pacific Highway. The airport is therefore easily reachable by rental car.
Public Transport
Several buses run along the Gold Coast, for example between Tweed Heads, Coolangatta and Surfers Paradise, but also to Kingscliff, West Tweed and Banora Point. There's a scenic bus route to Murwillumbah. Every hour buses also run to the less busy beaches of Bogangar and Pottsville, south of Coolangatta.
Traffic and Parking
Since the Pacific Highway was moved, the streets in the center of Coolangatta (and Tweed Heads) are far less busy; you'll have no trouble finding your way around and finding a free parking place is no problem either. Bear in mind though that some streets are extremely steep. Other destinations along the Australian east coast are easily reachable by rental car via the Gold Coast Highway and the Pacific Highway.

Being one of Australia's most popular beach destinations, Coolangatta has no shortage of accommodation: guesthouses, hotels, holiday resorts and apartments. We recommend booking your accommodation well in advance when visiting the Gold Coast in summer months (in Australia: November until March).
