General information

Rovaniemi Station is located at walking distance from the city center and was built in 1909. It's the northernmost station which is called at by electrical trains from the VR (Finnish railways) with connections to for example Oule, Helsinki (traveling time 9 - 12 hours), Tampere and Turku.

Rovaniemi is situated in Lapland, in the northern part of Finland. The city lies almost on the Arctic Circle. Rovaniemi is the capital of, but also the gateway to, Lapland. The main tourist attraction of the college town of Rovaniemi is Santapark. It's a sort of village, built outside the city, where Santa Claus is said to live. This attraction is open both in summer and in winter.

Transportation

Taxis can be found just outside the station. If you arrive during low season it's best to make a reservation via Tel. 016 106 410. Buses stop at the bus station, right next to the station. You can also rent a car at Rovaniemi Station to visit the city's surroundings. You can park your car at the parking space just in front of the station.

Services

A manned VR ticket office is open on weekdays from 7.45 a.m. until 9.20 p.m. and on weekends from 12 p.m. until 9.20 p.m. There's also a ticket machine. The waiting room is open daily from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. In addition, there are restrooms, a space to change babies' nappies, luggage lockers, and ski lockers (the slopes are only a few kilometers outside of Rovaniemi). The platforms are not at the same level as the trains. If you need assistance boarding a train, you need to contact VR at least 48 hours prior to departure.

Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
