Although Caen was severely damaged during the invasion of the Allies in World War II, the city is mainly known for its historical buildings that are still around. These buildings date from the time of William the Conqueror who conquered England in the eleventh century. His castle, Château de Caen, is one of Europe's largest fortresses. The Eglise St.-Etienne and the Eglise de la Ste.-Trinité were also built under William the Conqueror's rule.
115,000 inhabitants live in the city itself, but the entire urban area of Caen has a population of over 400,000.
Caen is located in Normandy, in the northwest of France, 10 kilometers from the English Channel with which the city is connected via the Canal de Caen à la Mer. Caen is situated in a watery area: the Orne River flows through the city as well as many brooklets and channels which together are called les Odons and which run partially underground.
In the last century Caen was an industrial center, but the industry has almost disappeared. Caen is, however, still the home base of Moulinex, a manufacturer of household appliances, which at its height (in the seventies) employed almost 4000 people. The factory went bankrupt in 2001 and was taken over by Groupe SEB. Nowadays Caen focuses on high-tech, call centers, and tourism (mainly nautical tourism). The port of Caen-Ouistreham plays an important part in freight transport across the English Channel.
The airport Aéroport Caen-Carpiquet is situated 7 kilometers east of the city center. It's easily reachable by rental car: from the center you take the Rue de Bayeux which turns into the D9 and ends at the airport. Caens' beltway (N814) also runs directly along the airport. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.
Caen has efficient public transport in the form of city buses and so-called guided buses. The latter are a cross between streetcars and buses: the streetcars have tires, but are guided by a rail in the middle of the road. At various locations in Caen you'll find bicycles (V'eol) which you can use for free for the first half hour. There are also buses to destinations in the vicinity of Caen, the so-called Bus Verts du Calvados.
The guided bus system (see Public Transport) has deteriorated the situation for car traffic rather than improved it. There are often traffic jams in the city center. Finding a free parking place in the street can be difficult, especially in the center. Fortunately there are several parking garages where you can park your rental car. North of the beltway lies the P+R area Côte de Nacre.
Caen's center offers a good choice of accommodations. Here you'll mainly find midrange and luxury hotels. Cheaper accommodations can be found near the train station and northwest of the city, outside the beltway (around Parc Floral).
