Introduction

Kavala is an important seaport in eastern Greek Macedonia. It has a beautiful center with old streets, churches, a castle and an aqueduct from the Roman times. More ancient relics can be found northwest of Kavala, where you'll find the ruins of the Macedonian city of Philippi. There are also beautiful beaches nearby.

Population

The city has approximately 70,000 inhabitants.

Location

Kavala is located in a hilly area in the northeast of Greece, on the Aegean Sea, about halfway between Thessaloníki and Alexandroupolis. Opposite the town lies the island of Thassos.

Economy

The port plays an important role in local economy; it's the second-largest port in the north of Greece (after Thessaloníki). Fishermen not only bring the fish ashore via the port, but the same fish is also exported this way. Tourism is an increasing source of income for the city. Thassos is a popular holiday destination and the island can only be reached via Kavala's port.

Airports

Kavala International Airport ‘Alexander the Great’ is situated 27 kilometers from the city center. It's easily reachable by rental car: from the center you first take Route 2 along the coast and then the Egnatia Highway (E90) to the airport. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.

Public Transport

Kavala has good public bus transport. There are also regional bus connections with other places in the north of Greece, but also with the capital Athens. Ferries maintain the connection with several islands in the northern part of the Aegean Sea via Kavala's port.

Traffic and Parking

Kavala is a fairly busy commercial town and it may therefore be difficult to find a free parking place in the streets in the center. Fortunately you can park your car at several parking lots (for example near the port) and parking garages. From Kavala, the rest of northern Greece is easily reachable via the modern freeway E90 (Egnatia Highway).

Hotels

Kavala has a reasonable choice of accommodations; most hotels are located on or near the port. The island Thassos offers much more choice of holiday hotels and resorts.
