Introduction
Orvieto is an old fortified city founded by the Etruscans. They chose a well defensible location, high above a steep tuff (a gray, volcanic rock) cliff. The city walls are made of the same material. People come to Orvieto to visit the historical center, but mainly for the spectacular location of the city.
Population
The town has over 21,000 inhabitants.
Location
Orvieto is located in southwestern Umbria, in Italy. The surroundings consist of porous, volcanic rock. Southwest of Orvieto lies Bolsena, on the lake of the same name.
Economy
Tourism forms an important source of income for Orvieto, but there are also extensive vineyards northeast of the city. Grapes have been cultivated here since the Middle Ages. Especially the white wine from this region, Orvieto Abboccato, is highly appreciated by connoisseurs.
Airports
Sant'Egidio Airport, the airport of Perugia, is the nearest airport, over 50 kilometers northeast of Orvieto. It's reachable by rental car via the SS448 and the SS3bis (travel time about 80 minutes).
Public Transport
The bus station lies on the eastern side of town, on the Piazza Cahen. From that station buses run to squares in the center: Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Repubblica. There are also bus connections with Viterbo, Bolsena, Perugia and Rome and there's a funicular between the bus station and the train station.
Traffic and Parking
From the freeway A1 (Milan-Rome) you drive via a spectacular, steep and winding road to Orvieto. You can park your rental car near the train station and take the funicular to the city center. In the historical center there are parking facilities near the Via Roma.
Hotels
Most people visit Orvieto on a day trip. This means that it can be busy during the day. To fully enjoy the town and the tranquility at night we recommend you stay one or a few nights in Orvieto. There are several guesthouses and hotels around the central Piazza del Duomo. You can also opt for agritourism (vacationing in farmhouses) in Orvieto's vicinity, but then a rental car comes in handy.
