Perugia is the capital in the region of Umbria in central Italy. It is a beautiful historic town, but also a university town. Besides old buildings and interesting museums, Perugia also has a vital nightlife. Furthermore, it is a center for art. The painter Pietro Vannucci (nicknamed Perugino) was born near the city. The frescoes in the de Sala del Cambio are his and at the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria are eight of his paintings. Perugino was the teacher of the famous Renaissance painter Raphael.

The city has a population of 165,000.

Perugia is located in the Umbria region, which is also called "the green heart of Italy". North and east of the city are the mountains of the Apennines. West of Perugia is a large lake, Lago Trasimezo.

Perugia is famous for its chocolate, which is made by manufacturer Perugina. You will notice this especially when visiting the city in October, when the annual Chocolate Festival takes place. In the vicinity you will find vineyards and olive groves. The city is an important educational center. There are two universities: the old and prestigious Università degli Studi and the Università per Stranieri, where foreign students study the Italian language and culture. Furthermore, there are an art school (founded in 1573), a conservatory and the journalist school for the Italian broadcaster RAI.

The city´s airport is located twelve kilometers east of Perugia. Perugia Airport is mainly used for domestic flights. Aeroporto Sant’Egidio is easily accessible by rental car: first follow the E45 and then the SS75. The exit to the airport is clearly indicated.

Public Transport

Public transport in Perugia is excellent. Half of the thirty lines run every twenty or thirty minutes, the rest runs less frequently. Furthermore, the city has a MiniMetro, an unmanned train, which runs from the car park at the football stadium to the city center. Please note that this service stops at 9pm.

Traffic and Parking

Perugia's center is closed to non-resident traffic at certain times. This restriction applies from 2am until 1pm. For visitors the street pattern is very confusing. There is much one-way traffic, which does not make it easier for you to find your way around. Around the old town, there are six parking lots from where you can take an elevator to the old town, which is situated higher. The biggest car park is at Piazza Partigiani. On Piazza Cupa you can park for free.

A rental car is an ideal means of transport for trips through the beautiful scenery and ancient towns of Umbria!

There is a wide range of accommodations in Perugia. From simple guesthouses to luxury holiday resorts and two five star hotels. In summer, the city is a popular tourist destination, during those months we recommend you to book your accommodation well in advance.
