Introduction

Asunción is the capital of Paraguay and one of the oldest cities on the South American continent. It used to be the colonial capital of all Spanish possessions in South America.

Population

Like the American capital Washington DC, Ciudad de Asunción isn't part of any of the country's departments. There are 700,000 inhabitants, but including the suburbs Asunción has over two million inhabitants.

Location

Paraguay's capital is located in the south of the country, on the river by the same name which forms the border with Argentina.

Economy

Asunción's main industries are textiles and tobacco, but most people work in the service industry. Not surprisingly, as many people work for the government in this seat of government. The city is also a center for (higher) education and culture.

Airports

Asunción Silvio Pettirossi International Airport lies nine kilometers north of the city center in the suburb Luque. It's reachable by rental car from the city center via the Avenida España and the Autopista al Aeropuerto Silvio Pettirosi, which, as indicated by the name, leads to the airport.

Public Transport

The city has excellent public transport which is serviced with modern buses. Long-distance buses also leave from the Avenida República Argentina to destinations outside Asunción and even to destinations outside Paraguay.

Traffic and Parking

Although the situation has improved in recent years, there are still streets in Asunción that haven't been maintained for years and it shows. In the city you therefore need to drive carefully, at least if you dare participating in the chaotic traffic with a rental car. In the city center it's not easy to find a parking place in the street, but there are several parking garages, for example near large shopping malls.

Hotels

Asunción has an enormous choice of accommodations in all categories ranging from dirt-cheap guesthouses to luxurious five-star hotels. Most hotels are found in the city center, between the Calle Cristóbal Colón and the Calle Estados Unidos.
