Car hire Nerja

Introduction

Nerja is a seaside resort on the Costa del Sol, but completely different from most other tourist resorts in the region. There are no high and ugly apartment buildings and hotels in Nerja. It still has the authentic atmosphere of a Spanish village, although most original inhabitants (fishermen) have thrown in the towel. Nearby the town lie famous caves, with primitive paintings.

Population

The town has approximately 22,000 inhabitants, including a large number of retirees from northern European countries.

Location

Nerja is located on the southern coast of Spain, 50 kilometers east of Málaga. Nearby you'll find beautiful beaches, hidden in bays. North of Nerja lie the hills of the Sierra de Burno.

Economy

Sugar used to be the main agricultural product in this region, but nowadays there are large avocado plantations near Nerja. Other (sub)tropical fruits are also cultivated, like mango and papaya. Tourism is of major importance to the town, just like the expenditure of northern Europeans who winter here or who have permanently settled here.

Airports

The nearest airport is Málaga Airport, over 55 kilometers west of Nerja. It's easily reachable by rental car via freeway A-7 which runs just north of Nerja and which connects Málaga with Almería.

Public Transport

The town has two bus lines; both have their central stop at the Riu Monica Hotel on the beach. There are also regional buses to places in the vicinity, including the Caves of Nerja, Málaga, Almunecar, Granada and Almería.

Traffic and Parking

Nerja's center consists of narrow streets and many of them are one-way streets. It's not easy to find a free parking place in the center, but there are two large parking lots to park your rental car. One lies along the Calle La Cruz, right in the center; the other one lies at five minutes walking along the Prol Carabeo.

Hotels

Nerja has a very large choice of accommodations. For those wanting to stay longer there are many apartments for rent, which you can tell from the numerous real estate agents in town. There are also basic guesthouses and good midrange hotels, but no luxurious hotel accommodations.
