Introduction

Playa del Inglés is a seaside resort on Gran Canaria, the main island of the Canary Islands. It's located on the coast in the Municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The coast consists of sandy beaches and high sand dunes. Annually, millions of tourists spend their holidays on this coast.

Population

The entire Municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana has approximately 55,000 permanent inhabitants, but because of the large number of tourists, the real number of people staying here at any point in time is much higher.

Location

Playa del Inglés is located on the south coast of Gran Canaria. It's the center of a chain of seaside resorts, with to the east San Augustín, to the west Maspalomas and to the southwest Costa Meloneras. Gran Canaria is the largest of the Canary Islands. The capital Las Palmas lies in the far northeast of Gran Canaria.

Economy

Although agriculture still plays a role in the rural areas of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, tourism is the main source of income. The beaches of Playa del Inglés and surroundings are among the most popular of Gran Canaria.

Airports

Gran Canaria Airport is situated 30 car kilometers northeast of Playa del Inglés. It's easily reachable by rental car as the airport lies directly along the main road GC-1 (or: Autovía Las Palmas-Puerto Rico) which runs from the popular seaside resorts on the south coast to the capital. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.

Public Transport

Playa del Inglés has good public bus transport, also to neighboring seaside resorts and other destinations on Gran Canaria. Most buses run via the main road Avenida de Tirajana and connect the city center with the shopping center Atlántico in the north and other seaside resorts along the south coast. There are also direct bus connections with Las Palmas and the airport.

Traffic and Parking

In summer months, traffic in Playa del Inglés can be extremely busy. Finding a parking place is often difficult, although the Spanish simply solve this by double parking their car. If this prevents you from leaving: blow your horn and the other driver will appear to move his car. There are large parking lots near the shopping centers. Playa del Inglés is well connected with the rest of Gran Canaria via freeway GC-1.

Hotels

Playa del Inglés and surroundings form the tourist center of Gran Canaria. There's an enormous choice of hotels, holiday resorts and apartments. We advise booking your accommodation well in advance, especially if you have your mind set on a particular hotel or location.
