Location information for Luleå
Introduction
Luleå is a port in the north of Sweden. One of the best-known nearby attractions is Gammelstads kyrkstad, a village built around a church from the fifteenth century. It's listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Population
The city has over 70,000 inhabitants.
Location
Luleå is located in the north of Sweden on the peninsula Svartöstaden, stretching out into the Gulf of Bothnia, and on the estuary of the river Lule. In front of the coast lie hundreds of islands.
Economy
Luleå's economy is a mix of trade, industry (especially steel industry), services and development of new technologies. The latter among others in cooperation with the local Technical University. There's also a base of the Swedish air force. The city harbor plays an important role in the export of iron ore from the hinterland. The harbor is also the home base of the Swedish icebreaker armada, which in winter keeps the shipping routes in the Gulf of Bothnia free of ice.
Airports
Kallax Airport is situated five kilometers south of the city center. There are regular domestic flights to Stockholm, Umeå and Gothenburg, but also to foreign destinations such as the Norwegian Tromsö and Murmansk in Russia. By rental car the airport can be reached from the city center via highway E4. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
City busses run very frequently. There are also several regional busses that connect the surrounding villages with Luleå. During weekends night busses run (until 03.00).
Traffic and Parking
During working days you must pay to park your car in the street in the city center. There are also several parking lots and garages in and around the city center. If you visit Luleå in winter months, beware of the sometimes severe weather conditions. Adjust your driving accordingly!
Hotels
Luleå has a reasonable supply of accommodation. In general you don't need to book your hotel room long time in advance. There's also a campsite in Karlsvik, which is open all year round. In summer you can pitch your tent, in winter you better choose the heated chalets.
