Introduction

In the Middle Ages, Norwich was the second-largest city of England, after London. It was an important city and you can still tell today based on the buildings from those days. Norwich has no less than two cathedrals in the attractive, historical center.

Population

The city has approximately 125,000 inhabitants.

Location

Norwich is located in the east of England, in an area known as East Anglia. The city is built on the Yare River which discharges into the North Sea further east. The flat, watery area east of town is called The Broads, a protected wetland and popular recreation area. Norwich lies about 185 kilometers northeast of the British capital London.

Economy

Financial services play a key role in local economy. Insurance company Aviva is one of the city's largest employers, but there are also other banks and insurers. One of the best-known products from Norwich is Colman's mustard, which is exported around the world. The city also has a university and it's an attractive city-trip destination. Tourists are attracted by Norwich' old center, but also by the shops and the gigantic open-air market which is held every weekend.

Airports

Norwich International Airport is situated in the city's northern suburbs, over 5 kilometers from the center. It's easily reachable by rental car. From the center you take Pitt Street (A1067), and then Reepham Road (A1024) and Cromer Road (A140) to the airport. The way is clearly signposted.

Public Transport

Norwich has a good public transport network. Most city buses are exploited by the company FirstGroup. There are also bus and train connections with for example Ipswich, Cambridge and London.

Traffic and Parking

Finding a free parking place in the street in the city center may be difficult. There are several parking garages around the center where you can park your rental car. An electronic system guides you to the nearest garage with availability. On the verge of town, there are also six P+R areas where you can park your rental car and continue your journey by public transport.

Hotels

Norwich has a good choice of accommodations: bed & breakfasts, guesthouses, midrange hotels and some more luxurious accommodations. In recent years, hotel chains have opened up new branches in the city center. In general, these hotels are good but somewhat colorless. There are two golf courses with good accommodations outside Norwich, but in this case a rental car is useful.
