Location information for Prestwick

Introduction

Prestwick is located in South Ayrshire, Scotland, also known as the Golf Coast. Near the city are many high quality golf courses, often with breathtaking views. On the Prestwick Old Course the first ever Open Golf Championship was held. Prestwick and historic Ayr are one city, and a popular weekend destination for the British for over a century. The city offers spectacular views of the Firth of Clyde with in the foreground the mountains of the island Arran and the Mull of Kintyre in the background, where Paul McCartney once had a studio and wrote an ode to it. Nearby there are beaches, but it often is very windy. For windsurfers this is a challenge. Furthermore, there are many nearby ruins of castles and fortresses, in short: typically Scotland!

Population

Prestwick has a population of 15,000.

Location

Prestwick is on the coast of southwest Scotland, on the Firth of Clyde. It borders the towns Ayr and Troon.

Economy

The airport is the main employer in Prescott. Passenger numbers grew strongly after budget airlines chose this airport for their flights to Glasgow. Part of the airport is being used by the British Navy that has three helicopters stationed there. Furthermore Prestwick Airport is used as a training center for pilots of British Airways among others. Tourism also plays a prominent role. Prestwick is surrounded by some of the best golf courses in Great Britain and historic Ayr also draws many visitors.

Airports

Glasgow Prestwick Airport is located two kilometers northeast of the town. It is a budget airline destination and Ryanair has a maintenance hangar there. The airport has a train station and is easily accessible by rental car. It is situated along the A79, just north of Prestwick and right across the Prestwick Golf Club.

Public Transport

There are eight local bus routes to destinations in both Prestwick and Ayr. There is also a regular bus service (every thirty or sixty minutes) to Buchanan Street in Glasgow.

Traffic and Parking

Both in Prestwick and Ayr, you can easily drive around in your rental car and also, finding a parking space is usually not a problem. The center of Ayr is partly a pedestrian zone. The way to the parking facilities is clearly indicated on signs.
