Introduction

Denver is the capital of the American state of Colorado. Because of it's location it is an ideal town for people who enjoy active outdoor activities, but do not want to do without typically urban pleasures such as museums, bars, restaurants and shops. The Denver Art Museum has a fine collection of modern and Indian art. Denver is located on the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains and is also called the ‘Mile High City’, because of its altitude of 1600 meters. One of the steps on the Capitol State Building is exactly one mile above sea level.

Population

The city has almost 600,000 inhabitants. In the urban area of Denver live 2.5 million people.

Location

Denver is centrally located in the United States, east of the Rocky Mountains and west of the High Plains. The city lies in the valley of the South Platte River, which flows into the Cherry Creek west of the city.

Economy

Due to its central location, Denver is a major hub for goods. These are transported by road, rail and the airport. Furthermore, Denver produces computer parts (storage and media devices), but also machinery for agriculture and mining. The city focuses on further development of high-tech companies. It wants to become the high-tech center of the so-called Southwest.

Airports

The city's airport is located thirty kilometers northeast of the center. Denver International Airport is easily accessible from the center by rental car in half an hour. Peña Boulevard is the most important road to the airport, accessible from the Interstate 70, Tower Road and the toll road E-470.

Public Transport

Denver has an extensive bus network. Along the 16th Street shopping area is a free line, which connects the two bus stations from Market Street and Civic Center. Furthermore, there is a light rail system, which will be expanded in the coming years. The two existing lines both run through the center, via the Convention Center to Union Station.

Traffic and Parking

De city is quite large and a rental car is an ideal means of transport. The streets in the center run from northwest to southeast and from northeast to southwest. Outside the center the streets follow the main wind directions. This can be somewhat confusing, especially since many streets in the center are one-way streets. Buy a good city-map!

On weekdays it is difficult to find a free parking space in the center of the city. Often, you can park your car just outside downtown Denver (20th St, Speer, Wynkoop St, Colfax and Broadway). You do have to pay at a parking meter on weekdays until 6pm. Just northwest of the center, behind the railway, you can park for free for a maximum of two hours.

Hotels

Near the Museum of Nature & Science there are many hotels in different price ranges. This is a popular area to stay in. If you want to stay in that neighborhood you'll want your room booked well in advance. Denver has a wide range of accommodations. Outside the high season it is usually easy to find a room that you will like.
