Location information for El Calafate
Introduction
El Calafate is a small town in Argentinean Patagonia. It's a popular tourist destination. The town is a hub to visit the glaciers in the National Park Los Glaciares (with among others the Perito Moreno glacier, the Cerro Chaltén and the Cerro Torre).
Population
The town has grown tremendously in the last few years and now has about ten thousand inhabitants.
Location
El Calafate is located in the far south of Argentina, on the southern shore of Lake Argentino. The town lies at the foot of the Andes, not far from the border with Chili.
Economy
El Calafate's economy is almost exclusively based on tourism to the glaciers in the Andes.
Airports
El Calafate International Airport (also: Comandante Armando Tola International Airport) is situated about twenty kilometers east of town. There are daily flights to for example Buenos Aires, Trelew en Bariloche. The airport is easily reachable by rental car via road number 11. The exit to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
There is no public transportation in El Calafate. There is however a bus connection with the other tourist attraction at the foot of the Andes: Bariloche.
Traffic and Parking
A rental car is an ideal means of transportation to discover El Calafate and surroundings. It's not difficult to find your way around, but you have to drive carefully on the narrow and winding mountain roads.
Hotels
El Calafate lives on tourism and the town therefore doesn't lack accommodations. We do strongly recommend booking your hotel room well in advance, because El Calafate is a popular tourist destination all year round.
