Introduction

Trelew is a city in Argentina founded by Welsh immigrants. For tourists it's mainly an operating base for attractions in the vicinity, like boat trips from the port city of Rawson (a 15-minute drive) to spot dolphins and whales. In the city itself it's worth visiting the Museo Paleontológico Egido Feruglio: a large collection of skeletons of dinosaurs that lived in Patagonia.

The city has almost 100,000 inhabitants.

Location

Trelew is located in the province of Chubut on the river of the same name which discharges into the Atlantic Ocean near Rawson. This is the northern part of Patagonia. Tourists often travel through the valley of the Chubut River or visit the penguin reserve near the city.

Economy

The Welsh immigrants introduced sheep breeding. Sheep still play an important role in this region's economy, both for the wool and the meat. The wool is partially exported as raw material, but the city also houses textile factories which use the wool for their clothing production. Trelew also has metallurgical and chemical industries. Tourism has increased in recent years. Not so much for the attractions in the city itself though; Trelew is mainly an operating base and service center for tourists who want to explore the northern part of Patagonia.

Airports

Trelew has its own airport, but it only serves as a hub for flights between the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires and El Calafate. Trelew Airport is situated less than 3 kilometers north of the city center and is easily reachable by rental car via the Avenida De Los Trabajadores and a small part of the RA-25.

Public Transport

The city has good public transport. Buses not only run within the city limits, but also to the port city of Puerto Rawson and to Gaiman, a typical Welsh town with for example an open-air gallery showing art made out of garbage.

Traffic and Parking

Trelew isn't a very busy city and it has a square street pattern, making it easy to find your way around. Finding a parking place for your rental car isn't a problem either. Trelew is connected with the capital Buenos Aires, at about 1370 kilometers, via freeway RN3.

Hotels

There are some hotels in the city center. Not many, but enough for the number of visitors. The café-restaurant of Hotel Touring Club in the city center is a popular meeting place. There are also some really basic accommodations in Playa Unión, on the coast near Rawson.
