Location information for Porec

Introduction

Poreč is an old port city in Croatia of over two thousand years old, full of buildings from the Byzantine and Venetian times. The showpiece is the Byzantine Euphrasian Basilica from the sixth century, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its location on the Adriatic Sea and the historical center make this city a tourist attraction.

Population

The town has approximately 12,000 inhabitants.

Location

Poreč is located on the west coast of the Istrian Peninsula, on the Gulf of Venice, the northern part of the Adrian Sea. The coast between the Mirna River in the north and Vrsar in the south consists of beautiful sandy beaches.

Economy

Because of its strategic location and the port, Poreč used to be a prosperous trading and fishing town. Nowadays tourism forms the main source of income. There's, however, some food industry in and nearby the town.

Airports

The nearest airport is Pula Airport, over 55 kilometers southeast of Poreč. It's easily reachable by rental car. From Poreč you take road 302 east and then freeway A9 (E751) to the airport.

Public Transport

Poreč is a small town, especially the historical center, which you can easily explore by foot. From the bus station there are connections with Pula and Rijeka. Buses also leave for the Croatian capital Zagreb. In summer months (April-October) there's a ferry connection from Venezia Lines to Venice.

Traffic and Parking

There are several large parking lots around the old city which are well signposted. A rental car is ideal to discover the rest of Istria. The roads on the peninsula are excellent and there are also good road connections with cities further out like Trieste, Ljubljana and Zagreb.

Hotels

Poreč was already a favorite destination for the European upper class in the middle of the nineteenth century. You'll therefore find some old hotels in the city, but most accommodations are located along the sandy beaches nearby. It's an elongated coast line of over 35 kilometers, between the Mirna River and the Lim Valley. Besides hotels and tourist resorts, there are many apartment buildings.
