Introduction

Biarritz is a luxurious bathing resort on the Bay of Biscay, for decades it has been a popular destination for the international jet set.  Surrounding the city there are beautiful beaches and there is also a lot for surfers to enjoy.

Location

Biarritz lies on the Atlantic coast in the southwest of France, 18 kilometers north of the border with Spain, it lies in the French part of the Basque Country that extends further to the west in Spain, along the Bay of Biscay.

Economy

There is a Dassault Aviation in Biarritz, where parts and aeroplane fuselages are made for Falcon airplanes, furthermore the economy mainly relies on tourism. The luxurious hotels attract a rich public that spends money easily. Besides the beaches, the tourists are attracted by the fine designed golf courses in and around Biarritz.

Airports

The city's airport is called in full Aéroport de Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne and lies 4 kilometers east of Biarritz, along the highway N10. There are connections with Paris and Lyon in France and other European cities.

Public transport

Biarritz does not have city buses, though there are good bus connections with nearby towns Bayonne and Anglet and to destinations further away (including Pau, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Hendaye and places in Spain). All buses leave from Place d'Ixelles in the center of the city.

There is a high-speed train connection (TGV) with Paris.

Traffic and parking

Driving around in Biarritz is not a problem and there are sufficient parking areas. In the city center one has to pay for parking but at some of the beaches there are free parking areas. There is even a special, free, RV parking area.

Hotels

Although Biarritz is known as a luxurious bathing resort and there are indeed expensive and luxurious resorts, it is not difficult to find a more economic room, especially in the area of Avenue Carnot you can find accommodations that are priced very reasonably, though it is recommended to book a room in advance, especially during summer.
