Introduction

At first sight, the Greek industrial city of Volos doesn't seem to offer much for tourists. Many people only come here to catch the ferry to the Sporades Islands: Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos. However, walk through the center and you will probably change your mind. Behind the boulevard along the coast, there's a pedestrian street with nice shops, cafés and restaurants, especially near the Agios Nicholaos Cathedral. From the Agios Konstantinos Church, on the boulevard, a beautiful park runs until the city beach Anavros. The city also houses a small, but interesting archeological museum.

Population

The city itself has approximately 70,000 inhabitants, but about 140,000 people live in the entire urban area of Volos and surroundings.

Location

The port city of Volos is located on the east coast of Greece, on a sheltered bay which is connected with the Aegean Sea. Thessaloníki lies over 300 kilometers north and the Greek capital Athens over 200 kilometers south. On the north side of town lies Mount Pelion (1651 meters), where three rivers rise which run through the city. West of town lies swampland.

Economy

Thanks to the port and its strategical location between densely populated areas (Athens and Thessaloníki), Volos is an important industrial center. Steel industry has a visible presence and there's also a large cement factory. The last few years, Volos focuses more on research & development. The CEnter for REsearch and TEchnology THessaly (CERETETH) is headquartered in Volos.

Airports

Volos Airport is named after its location: Nea Anchialos Airport. It's also called Volos Central Greece Airport or Volos Nea Anchialos Airport. It's situated 20 kilometers southwest of Volos and reachable by rental car via Route 30, or freeways E92 and E75. The way and the exit to the airport are clearly signposted along both roads.

Public Transport

Volos has good public city transport: twelve bus lines run through the city. There are also good interregional connections with other Greek cities, like Athens and Thessaloníki. The bus stations for city buses and interregional buses lie next to each other.

Traffic and Parking

There are some pedestrian streets in the city center, especially near the Agios Nicholaos Cathedral. Volos is a fairly busy city and it may be difficult to find a free parking place in the street. There's a large parking lot near the popular beach Anavros, but it may be full in summer. Alykes, southwest of the city center, is a quieter beach. From the center, it takes 5 minutes by rental car.

Hotels

Volos has a reasonable choice of accommodations. Most hotels can be found nearby the city beach Anavros, near the center, but there are also some guesthouses and hotels near Alykes Beach in Neas Pagases, southwest of Volos. Although the city isn't a tourist attraction, we advise booking your hotel room in advance if you want to stay in Volos in the summer.
