Introduction

Gerona, also known as Girona among the Catalan population, is an impressive medieval city. The city's wealth during the Middle Ages has left many impressive Roman and Gothic buildings. The combination of these buildings and the city's location certainly make it worth a visit.

Population

Gerona has about 77,000 inhabitants, which is nowhere near enough to make it one of Spain's 30 largest cities. However, Gerona is one of the larger cities in the north of the autonomous region of Catalonia.

Location

Gerona is situated at about 36 kilometers of the Mediterranean. The Onyar river flows straight through elegant Gerona. To the north-west of the city are the outskirts of the Pyrenees, which are located at about 75 kilometers from Gerona.

Economy

Gerona is located in an agricultural area. Its economy depends to a large extent on the trade of the produce that is cultivated nearby. Some of the products that are traded in Gerona, among other places on its big market, are pigs and chickens.

Tourism also plays a major role in Gerona's economy. During the summer, many students and other tourists come to the city. Many people visit the city to enjoy its nightlife and old buildings.

Airports

Gerona's airport, Girona Aiport, is located 11 kilometers to the south of the city. It is used by low cost carriers like Ryanair, for tourists who are headed for Barcelona. As a result, the city is a cheap destination to reach.

Public transport

If you do not have a rental car, you can use Gerona's public transport. Gerona has a train station, from which you can travel to, among other places, Barcelona and France. The Barcelona bus service provides transport from Gerona Airport to the city. The same bus line connects Gerona to Barcelona.

Traffic and Parking

Driving in Gerona is unlikely to pose any problems. Like in many cities, it may be a bit difficult to find a place to park your car in the city center, if you did not book a hotel that includes parking. In light of the city's size, it is simple to park your car nearby and proceed on foot.
