General information

The main station of Santiago de Compostela is situated in the city center on the Rúa de Hórreo. Every day, a day and a night train leave from Madrid. The journey takes 7 hours. There are also trains which run via Bilbao and San Sebastián in the direction of the French border. Santiago de Compostela is situated in the northwest of Spain in the province of La Coruña.

It's one of the main Christian pilgrimage places. Legend has it that apostle James, one of Jesus' disciples, was buried here. The city is officially called Santiago, but there are many more cities by that name. Compostela is a nickname, which is mainly used when the city is referred to as a pilgrimage place. The pilgrims from all over Europe can be recognized by the scallop shell, the symbol of Saint James.

Transportation

You have several options to visit the city or its surroundings. You can of course walk or cycle along the historical route, but there are sufficient taxis and buses that take you anywhere from the station. Or do you prefer to drive yourself and rent a car?
