Location information for Bergerac

Introduction

The atmospheric town of Bergerac is situated on the Dordogne river, which is also the name of the department. In the old half-timbered houses, nice little shops and restaurants have been established, and you will be astounded by the enormous amount of beautiful flowers in the town. No, there is no big church or old castle that you can admire, but you will be pleasantly surprised by the relaxed atmosphere and the friendliness of the inhabitants.

Population

More than 26,000 people live in Bergerac.

Location

Bergerac lies in the department Dordogne, which is part of the region Aquitaine in the southwest of France. Largely, the city lies north of the Dordogne river, which rises in the Massif Central and merges with the Garonne to the north of Bordeaux.

Economy

The town lies in a wine region and wine production is therefore one of the most important activities. East of Bergerac lies the wine region Pécharmant, where full-bodied red wine is made, and south of the city lies Monbazillac, where sweet white wines come from. Furthermore, Bergerac is traditionally a center for trade in tobacco.

Airports

The Aéroport de Bergerac-Roumanière lies about 5 kilometers southeast of the town, right next to the Route Nationale 21. Budget airlines maintain connections with many destinations in Great Britain and Ireland, but there are also flights to and from ParisBrussels and Amsterdam. With your rental car you can easily reach Bordeaux from the airport: follow the N21 and then the D936.

Public transportation

There are three bus lines in Bergerac. During the day the buses run regularly, but fewer buses run during evenings and weekends.

Traffic and parking

The small, narrow streets in the center of Bergerac are best explored on foot. You will have no difficulty to find a parking spot outside the center for your rental car. Bergerac is an excellent starting point to explore the Dordogne. Therefore a rental car is essential.

Hotels

In and around Bergerac you will have no trouble to find accommodation. There are simple hostels, hotels in the middle class, and campsites. Furthermore, around the town, several charming houses and farms are for rent. On the Bergerac Tourist website (see below), you will find more information on the possibilities.
